Cute Ideas for Spelling Bees

According to Scripps, the purpose of a spelling bee is to improve students' vocabulary, spelling, and grammar of the English language. Each year schools around the country host spelling bees to choose a representative in their school to hopefully compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. There are many ideas to make your school's spelling bee a fun and exciting experience for your participating students.

    • Create cute posters to advertise the school's spelling bee. Use your favorite computer design program and write the words, "We want you to 'bee' part of the our school's spelling bee!" somewhere on the poster. Write the event's date, time, and place using a bold font. Include any pertinent information regarding entry to the contest. In the center of the poster, put an image of a cartoon-like bee found on the Internet or from your computer printing program's image database. Print out a single copy and make additional copies on bright yellow paper. Hang these around your entire school.

    Audience Participation

    • Involve the audience in your school's spelling bee. Not everyone will participate in the spelling bee itself, but encourage students to watch the event and support their classmates. When they enter the location of the spelling bee, assign them to a special cheering section. Divide the room into queen bees and worker bees, and send them to their appropriate seats. At various points throughout the bee, ask the different sections to have contests to see which bees cheer the loudest for the students participating in the spelling bee. You can even have each section create their own unique cheer for participants to share when the winner is announced.

    Cupcakes

    • Celebrate the spelling bee with your school and bake cupcakes for the occasion. Make a variety of flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry and ice them all with white icing. Keep the icing flat on the cupcake, so that you have a flat surface to write the letter "B." Choose a bold font from your computer and print out the letter "B" large enough to cover the top of the cupcake. Cut out the letter, creating a stencil. Place the stencil over the iced cupcake and sprinkle edible glitter over it. Remove the stencil to uncover the "B" for your school's spelling "bee."

    Bee Coupon Book

    • Create special awards to hand out at your school's spelling bee. Not every student will advance to the next level, but it is important to recognize all students who participate in the bee. Use your computer to create a "Bee Coupon Book" for each participant. Use graphics of a bee throughout the book and write, "Thanks for BEEing part of the Spelling Bee," somewhere inside or on the cover. Include coupons for extra time at recess or lunch as a reward to students.
