Mixed Multiplication Games

Assisting students in memorizing the multiplication facts requires the incorporation of varied activities into instruction. Using engaging games that require application, recall and use of multiplication along with other math functions improves students' problem-solving abilities and provides an alternative to textbook and workbook driven lessons directing the course of mathematics instruction. Supplemental activities, such as mixed multiplication games, deepen students' learning, improve students' mental math abilities and support transferring learning to long-term memory.
  1. Hands-on Multiplication Game 1

    • For this game you will need 30 counters for four groups of students. Cups, plastic forks, math manipulatives or pennies will do. Have the students create a list of multiplication sentences using the counters to assist. Use the example of 10 x 3 and make three piles of 10 counters each. At the end of the period, compare students' lists to create a class list of multiplication sentences, on either the board or chart paper, without repeating any one sentence.

    Hands-on Multiplication Game 2

    • This game uses dominoes (see Resources for printable game sheets). Place a set of dominoes upside down on a table. Ask a student to volunteer to choose one. Count the dots on each side of the line on the domino and write the numbers into the boxes on the sheets. Then, form students into pairs and have the students complete the sheets using their own set of dominoes. Students multiply the numbers and record the answers in the appropriate boxes. The last step is to have students total the answers to the multiplication problems. The pair of students with the highest correct total wins.
