How to Make a Handmade Compass

Electromagnetism can be a difficult concept for third and fourth graders to understand. If you are looking for ways to make the science easier for them to grasp, interactive craft projects engage children's attention in a way lessons alone cannot. A handmade compass requires minimal materials and is easy for small hands to construct. Demonstrate the principles of electromagnetism with this compass that can be made in less than 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle, 1 inch to 2 inches long
  • Bar magnet
  • Craft knife
  • Cork
  • Glass or cup
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Stroke the needle approximately 40 times with the bar magnet to magnetize it. Work from eye to point in one direction; don't rub back and forth.

    • 2

Slice a 1/4-inch thick circle off the cork with a craft knife. Place it on a flat surface and push the needle through the side of the cork so the eye and point extends equally from opposite sides of the circle.

    • 3

Fill the glass half full with water and float the pierced cork circle on top and you have a simple handmade compass. Placed on a flat surface and away from metal objects, the needle will adjust to point to the closest magnetic pole, north or south depending on your location.
