How to Make an Adjective an Adverb

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. A few examples of adjectives are "beautiful," "mean," "warm" or "purple." An adverb is a word that describes a verb. "Slowly," "happily," "coldly" and "lazily" are all adverbs. You can make an adjective turn into an adverb by following a few rules, such as adding "ly" to the end of an adjective or changing the last letter of the adjective to "i" and then adding "ly."

Instructions

    • 1

Add "ly" to the end of most adjectives to turn them into an adverb. For example, the word "beautiful" is an adjective, but when "ly" is added, it becomes the adverb "beautifully."

    • 2

Change the last letter of the adjective to "i" if the adjective ends with "y," and then add "ly" to turn the word into an adverb. For example, the adjective "happy" ends with a "y," so you would change it into the adverb "happily."

    • 3

Keep the adjectives/adverbs the same if the words are "late," "early," "fast" or "hard." By adding an "ly" to the end of these words, you'll change the meaning. For example, "hard" becomes "hardly," which probably would not be the adverb you are looking for.

    • 4

Turn the adjective "good" into the adverb "well." "Well" is also used when referring to health, such as "I feel well today," as opposed to "I feel good today."
