How to Make a Kids' Book About Biology

Handcrafting a biology book for kids is an assignment for advanced placement biology students to teach younger children complex science concepts. By teaching a child biology, AP students will better understand the material themselves. This hands-on activity translates difficult biology concepts into easy-to-understand language and diagrams for children from kindergarten to third grade. Choose a biology subject such as the life cycle of a butterfly to teach about insects in a kids' biology book project

Instructions

    • 1
A book about butterflies teaches young children about insect stages.

Organize your book before you work on the final card stock paper with scrap paper and pencil. Place diagrams according to each stage in the life cycle of the butterfly. The first page should have a picture of an adult butterfly with a brief introduction, the second page is the egg on a leaf, the third page is the larva or caterpillar stage eating a leaf, the fourth page is the pupa or chrysalis stage, and the fifth and final page is the imago or final adult stage with a diagram of all the parts.

    • 2

Print out the text for your book on the card stock, leaving spaces for illustrations. The binding will be 1 inch from the left edge. Your book pages need to compensate for the binding. Write clearly and simply. You're not "dumbing down" the complex science but teaching it to young children. Always use the real science words but make it easy to understand.

    • 3

Draw pictures and diagrams for each page and section of text with colored pencils. Children respond well to hand-drawn images, but be sure they are clear and easy to read.

    • 4

Stack all finished card stock pages together. Place one piece of chipboard underneath and place one piece of chipboard on top. Clamp it all together with butterfly clips except the left side. That side is where the binding goes.

    • 5

Drill five equidistant holes along the left side of the book about an inch from the edge with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Thread the ribbon into the needle. Push the ribbon into the top hole from the back and pull all of the ribbon through except 5 inches of it.

    • 6

Push the needle with ribbon into the second hole from the front. Push the needle through the third hole from the back and then push it through the fourth hole from the front. Enter the fifth hole from behind. Using the needle, work your way though all of the holes, going up to create a criss-cross pattern.

    • 7

Tie a knot at the top of the book with the 5 inches of beginning ribbon with the leftover ribbon. Cut off any excess ribbon with scissors to make it look even.

    • 8

Draw a front cover illustration of a butterfly and write a title and author's name with it. Cut it out and glue it to the front cover with a glue stick. Allow it to dry completely.
