How to Build a Mayflower

American history is an important part of a good education. Thanksgiving is a holiday that belongs solely to America. Learning about how the pilgrims came to America is a lesson often taught at Thanksgiving time. Making a model of the Mayflower will help illustrate a voyage fraught with danger. During the two-month voyage, many passengers died, but the Mayflower brought the remaining pilgrims safely to land.

Instructions

  1. Ocean & Ship

    • 1

Glue a piece of blue construction paper to the 8 ½" x 11" piece of heavy cardboard to make an ocean. Draw waves with the blue marker or a blue crayon.

    • 2

Staple two sheets of brown construction paper together at the top corners.

    • 3

Sketch a boat shape lightly in pencil on the brown construction paper and cut it out to form two identical boat shapes.

    • 4

Draw lines to look like planks on the sides of the ship that will be facing out. Print " Mayflower," near the top on each side of the ship. Use the black marker or crayon for both of these steps.

    • 5

Glue the boat shapes together at the sides to form the ship part of the Mayflower. Let it dry; flatten the bottom a little and glue it to the ocean.

    • 6

Cut a large rock-like shape out of grey or light brown construction paper. Write "Plymouth" on the rock and bend down the bottom edge so the rock will stand up. Glue it to the ocean on one side of the Mayflower.

    The Sails

    • 7

Fold a piece of white printer paper in half width wise. Draw a triangle-shaped sail on the white paper.

    • 8

Cut through both layers of the paper so there are 2 sails. Punch two holes for the drinking straw "mast" to slide through in each sail.

    • 9

Place two small lumps of modeling clay in the bottom of Mayflower and push the ends of each drinking straw mast into the lumps so they stand upright.
