How to Make a Community Helper Diorama

A community helper thematic unit often is taught to early elementary students, and the teacher may require students to display the learned knowledge in a nontraditional manner, such as constructing a diorama. A diorama is a three-dimensional artistic display of scenery and characters. In this case, such a diorama may include one specific type of community helper or a town of community professionals. Use items that you already have around the house, as well as recycled items, to construct it.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the inner sides of a shoebox with sky blue paint at the top and green paint at the bottom to resemble grass. Allow the paint to dry completely before adding any decor.

    • 2

Measure the bottom of the shoebox and cut a piece of green paper to fit in the box. Apply glue to the paper and press it securely into the box without adhering it to the box sides.

    • 3

Cut 2-inch-wide strips of black paper and glue them in a cross in the center of the box's bottom to appear as roads. Paint yellow, dashed lines in the center of the strips for road lines.

    • 4

Wrap juice boxes in different-colored pieces of paper to appear as high-rise buildings. Cut some juice boxes in half for shorter buildings and place the open section down in the shoebox.

    • 5

Draw and color different symbols on the juice box papers to align with the community helper theme. For example, draw a red "+" symbol for the doctor's office, an envelope for the post office and a "$" symbol for the bank.

    • 6

Glue or tape the paper-covered juice boxes in the green paper sections of the bottom of the shoebox around the black roads. Position some standing on end and others on their sides.

    • 7

Position plastic people, such as a doctor near the hospital, a postal worker near the post office, a crossing guard, a teacher and any other community helpers. When plastic people are not available, make them from paper, color them and adhere them to the inside of the box.
