How to Practice the Alphabet

Practicing the alphabet is not difficult, but it does take some repetition. You can help teach your child or student the alphabet by using letter tracing as a method to teaching writing and by using flash cards as a method to teach pronunciation. By repeating these methods, a child can learn the basics of the alphabet and pronunciation, and be able to remember to the shapes and sounds of all the letters.

Instructions

  1. Practicing Writing

    • 1

Write each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case on the large-lined paper as an example for the child. You can also use preprinted traceable letters as examples.

    • 2

Allow the child to trace what you have written or printed.

    • 3

Repeat Steps one and two until the child can write the letters from memory.

    Flash Cards

    • 4

Write out each letter in upper and lower cases, one letter per flash card.

    • 5

Paste a picture to each flash card. For example, you could paste a picture of an apple for the letter "a." Use simple items that are recognizable to the child. If you use something such as antelope for the letter "a," the child might not recognize the picture, and it will be harder to learn the letter.

    • 6

Show the child the flash cards. Help the child learn the pronunciation and forms of the letters by saying the words and letters aloud. For example, instead of just saying, "a," you might say something like "'a' for apple."
