Teach students about different places around the world by studying the animals in those locations. Spend a week studying animals that live in cold weather climates, such as polar bears and penguins. Explore African animals including monkeys, kudus, elephants, giraffes and zebras. Discuss what these animals eat and the ways in which the animals adapt to their habitat. Provide paper, markers and crayons and ask students to draw pictures of the animals you study as they exist in their habitat.
Celebrate holidays from around the world with decorations, foods and traditional stories. Many holidays take place all over the world during winter. In addition to Christmas and New Years, celebrate Kwanzaa on December 26 by burning red, black and green candles and inviting African Americans from your community to your class to discuss the meaning of the holiday. Enjoy latkes for Chanukah and celebrate the Chinese New Year with your own parade featuring red and gold costumes. Ask students in your class to talk about special holidays that they celebrate with their family. Immerse students in the traditions of different holidays by teaching them traditional songs and dances.
Expose your preschool students to foods from all over the world. Invite parents and community members of different nationalities to bring in food. Create simple foods in your classroom with your students' help. Enjoy traditional cuisine from places like Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, Australia and Japan. Show students how many of the foods they eat at home come from other places around the world.
Teach students about different countries around the globe by letting them explore that country's sights and sounds. Show videos and pictures of the varying landscapes of countries around the world, including the Serengeti of Africa, the Grand Canyon in the United States, the ice in Antarctica and the desert in Australia. Let students listen to voices speaking different languages from around the world or invite members of your community who speak different languages to visit the classroom. Play music from China, Japan and Ireland and bring in musical instruments from different cultures for students to play.
