Ways to Expand Global Knowledge in the Classroom

In the current age of globalization, in which what happens in a far-away country in Africa, Asia or the Middle East can impact life in America, it is important that you process knowledge of what is happening around the world. This knowledge can be acquired while you are a student. There are various ways in which students can be helped to expand their global knowledge.
  1. International Exchange Programs

    • Students should be encouraged to join organizations such as IASTE and AIESEC, which will enable them to embark on learning experiences in foreign countries. AIESEC is present in about 107 countries and offers its members more than 10,000 international internships and about 470 conferences. This student-run nonprofit organization aims to develop leadership qualities in its members. Many universities have an AIESEC and/or IASTE body in their region that students can join. The advantage of an exchange program is that you can either travel or host students from other countries during your studies.

    Educational Scholarships and Grants

    • Many governments and non-governmental organizations offer scholarships and grants to students to study in a foreign country. Living and studying in another country creates a rich knowledge base. One such organization is Erasmus Mundus, a European program whose main aim is to enhance quality higher education through scholarships and academic coordination between Europe and the rest of the world.

    Clubs and Associations

    • Students should be encouraged to join clubs and associations in their school that may organize trips to other countries. Some may feature educational studies of certain aspects of a foreign culture, such as music, art or wildlife. An example is the World Scout's Association, which hosts regional and international camps all over the world. Members are part of an international family that transcends language, borders and race.

    Sport and Competitions

    • Students should engage in sports activities that offer opportunities to travel to foreign countries. The IAAF Junior World Championships, which are held every two years, allow teenagers from all parts of the world to compete. Participants can develop friendships across cultures. Other sports allowing students to participate in foreign travel include soccer, tennis and golf.
