Crafts for Old King Cole

"Old King Cole" is a nursery rhyme that dates back to the third century and probably refers to one of three kings in history of the same name. The nursery rhyme is about King Cole and how he called for his three fiddlers to play for him. Read ""Old King Cole" to kids and follow up the story with simple crafts that kids can make that are related to the rhyme.
  1. Crown

    • Kids can make their own crowns using heavy paper, crayons, markers, plastic gems, scissors and glue. Give each child a piece of paper with an image of a crown. Instruct the kids to decorate the crown by coloring it and gluing plastic gems on the crown. Macaroni, buttons, glitter and strips of colorful yarn can also be used for decoration. After the children are finished decorating the crown, they can cut it out and you can help them staple the crown to fit their heads.

    Instruments

    • Old King Cole had three fiddlers, each with a very fine fiddle. Teach the kids about the fiddle and other musical instruments, then have them make their own. You can color pictures of fiddles, or add some other instruments to his band. For example, maracas are easy to make. Use cans with plastic lids, such as coffee cans. Fill the cans about 1/3 of the way with dried beans, corn or rice. Help the kids glue the plastic lids on the cans with a hot-glue gun.

    Memory Playing Cards

    • Print out images related to the "Old King Cole" nursery rhyme, such as pictures of a king, a pipe, a bowl, a fiddle, a fiddler and the number three. Make copies of each picture, making sure that there are two copies of each image to make a set of cards for each child. Have the kids color the images, which should be printed inside a dotted square. Instruct the kids to cut out each square and to glue each image on a blank index card. The kids can play a game of "Memory" in school and at home.

    Life-size King

    • Kids can make their own life-size kings. Cut a length of paper from a roll of paper just long enough for the size of the child. Match each child with a partner so they can take turns outlining each other's body on the paper. Instruct the kids to draw, color and paint their outline to make it look like royalty by drawing things such as a crown, scepter, jewels and clothing.
