Creative Way to Teach the Types of Sentences to Fourth Grade Students

Kids in the fourth grade begin to use their writing skills for different academic activities. Therefore, it is important for fourth graders to learn about interrogative, imperative, declarative and exclamatory sentences. Explain the different sentence types to fourth grade students with examples for each explanation and teach them with interesting and creative games and activities.
  1. Play "Wheel of Fortune"

    • Divide the class into Team A and Team B. Prepare a few sentences for each of the four types of sentences. Draw lines representing all the letters for each word in the sentence, including a line for the end punctuation. If the first team that chooses a letter gets it right, they continue choosing letters by taking turns. If they get it wrong, the other team gets to try. The team that guesses the sentence correctly, and identifies what kind of sentence it is wins. If a wrong guess is made, the other team gets a chance to guess the answers.

    Sentence Cards Activity

    • You need four index cards so you can write the word, "declarative" on the first card, "interrogative" on the second card, "exclamatory" on the third and "imperative" on the fourth. Walk to each student row by row, having them draw a card without showing them the cards. Each child has to come up with one of the four kinds of sentences, depending on the card they draw, and say the sentence so the whole class can hear.

    Identification and Punctuation Activity

    • Write different kinds of sentences on chart paper, if possible, enough sentences so that each child has a chance to participate in the activity. Exclude the punctuation mark at the end of each sentence. Have the first child identify what kind of sentence the first sentence is by writing "D" for declarative, "IN" for interrogative, "IM" for imperative and "E" for exclamation. They should also punctuate the sentence correctly. At the end of the activity, have the class read all of the sentences aloud, one at a time.

    Grouping Game

    • Write or type different types of sentences on strips of paper. Make sure that you have enough sentences so that each student gets one. Have all of the kids stand up and look at the sentence that they got. The object of this activity is to group students with the same kinds of sentences together. They do this by talking to the other students and comparing the kind of sentences that they have. When everyone finds others with the same sentences, the group must read each of their sentences out loud to make sure they are in the correct group.
