A sock puppet is a quick and easy craft for children to make. This activity is perfect if time is limited. To make a Herman the Worm sock puppet you will need a striped sock, a pair of googly eyes, yarn, child-safe scissors and fabric glue.
Lay the sock flat on the table and fold the toe part over in order to make Herman’s head. Cut a short length of yarn for Herman’s mouth. Using fabric glue, stick Herman’s eyes and mouth onto the newly created head area.
Give a new meaning to the term “bookworm” by making a Herman the Worm bookmark. You will need a printed or traced image of Herman, stiff paper or cardboard, a hole puncher, yarn, glue, child-safe scissors and coloring materials.
Glue the image of Herman onto the stiff paper. Carefully cut along the outline, following his shape and leaving a bit of space at the top. With the hole puncher, punch a hole onto the space above Herman’s head. Insert a length of yarn through the hole and tie it in a knot. Give Herman a little color with the coloring materials.
To make Herman the Worm stickers, you will need some printer-friendly sticker paper, child-safe scissors and coloring materials. On a sheet of sticker paper, print out several images of Herman the Worm in varying sizes. Decorate him with the coloring materials and cut out each sticker carefully.
Making a Herman the Worm balloon is quick and easy. You will need a “260” size balloon -- 2 inches in diameter by 60 inches in length, a hand air pump and some permanent markers for decorating.
Using a hand air pump, or any other air pump that is available to you, inflate the 260 balloon -- also known as a twisting balloon -- and tie the end in a knot to trap the air. Allow the child to decorate the balloon at will with permanent markers, giving Herman a face and drawing the segments of his body.
