Crafts & Activities for America the Beautiful

"America the Beautiful," by Katharine Lee Bates, is a patriotic song known by kids and adults alike. The words were inspired by a trip Bates took to Pikes Peak in Colorado in 1893 and were originally released as a poem rather than a song. Later, the words were put to the popular tune most people are familiar with today. There are many crafts and activities to do with a child as you teach her about this song and the country's history.
  1. Diorama

    • Play the song "America the Beautiful" for your child. Discuss the lyrics and ask him to choose his favorite line. For example, he might choose "For purple mountain majesties." Ask the child to create a diorama representing this part of the song. Give him an old shoebox or cardboard box and a variety of craft materials to complete the assignment. If you are doing this activity with a class, allow each child to choose a different lyric and represent the entire song in dioramas.

    Photography

    • Create a visual songbook to "America the Beautiful." On each page, write a few lines from the song and ask the child to paint that lyric using washable paints or watercolors. Provide her with examples of beautiful landscapes across the United States so that she has a basis for the artwork. Combine all of the pages in order and title the book "America the Beautiful Represented in Artwork." Take the pages to a printer to have the book professionally bound or place them in a binder if you wish to save money.

    America Frame

    • Create a patriotic frame to celebrate America and the song. Purchase a plastic red, white or blue frame at your local hobby store. Choose a pre-cut wooden star and paint it silver and then add spray glitter to it. Glue the star to the corner of the picture frame. Make a copy of the the song "America the Beautiful," or retype it on your computer and place it in the frame so the child can refer to the song.

    Collage

    • Play the song for your child and ask him to create a collage based on the song lyrics. Provide him with a variety of old magazines, scissors and glue for the project. Encourage him to cut out pictures that represent America and the song lyrics, as well as words that represent the country. Use your computer word processing program to print out any words the child wishes to put on the collage that cannot be found in the magazines. Title the collage "America the Beautiful" and display it in your home.
