In math, a square has four sides of equal length. Cutting a square exactly in half will split it into two equal rectangles. If you continue splitting into exact halves, your measures will double; you can split a whole into halves, halves into fourths, and fourths into eighths. An eighth is one of eight equal pieces that add up to make the whole. If you already have four squares, you only need to split each square in half once to create eighths.

1
Lay a ruler across the width of one of the squares and measure the entire length from one edge to the next. For this example, say the square is 4 inches wide.
-
2
Mark a line at the halfway point of the square. For instance, if the square is 4 inches wide, then make a mark at the 2-inch point.

3
Draw a line across the square where you made the mark. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the other three squares.
