How to Divide Triangles Into Four

Triangles are classified according to their sides or according to their angles. There are many ways of dividing the interior space of a triangle. One of the most interesting is the Sierpinski triangle, an example of fractal geometry. Pascal's triangle is another way of dividing a triangle. Further study of Pascal's triangle reveals its similarity to Sierpinski's triangle.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a triangle. Mark the mid-point of each of its three sides.

    • 2

Connect the midpoints to each other. You have divided the triangle into four triangles.

    • 3

Learn an alternate method of dividing a triangle into four interior triangles. Draw a triangle. Draw a line horizontal to the base, connecting the midpoints of the two sides.

    • 4

Mark the midpoint on this horizontal line.

    • 5

Draw two lines from the two base vertices to this midpoint. You have four interior triangles.
