How to Find Ratios of Triangles

A ratio is a comparison between two values. If you calculate the ratios of two triangles, you are determining how much larger or smaller one triangle is in comparison to the other. You also can calculate ratios within the same triangle, such as in the case of comparing the length of one leg to another. You might have to perform this type of calculation as an assignment in a high school or college geometry course.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the first measurement. For instance, you might have leg of a triangle that is 8 inches long.

    • 2

Write a division symbol or a colon (/ or :).

    • 3

Write the second measurement. In this example, you might be comparing the first leg of the triangle to another leg that is 4 inches long. Therefore, you would write 8/4 or 8:4.

    • 4

Divide the first measurement by the second. In this case, you would divide 8 by 4 to get 2. This means that the first leg is twice as long as the second.
