How to Simplify the Sums & Differences of Radicals

In mathematical terms, the radical symbol is used to denote an "nth root" expression, such as square root, cube root or fourth root. When not given a calculator or when working with variables, finding the results of problems that ask you to add or subtract radicals from one another might seem daunting at first. However, through the application of advanced algebraic concepts, it is possible to simplify these equations and make them easier to process.

      Look for common elements under the radical symbol. For example, if your equation is (8 * square root of 2x) minus (3 * square root of 2x), your common element is the square root of 2x.

      Move the uncommon elements into a set of parentheses, adding or subtracting them from one another according to the mathematical operator in play, then place the common element after the parentheses. In the above example, this would give you an equation of (8 - 3) * (square root of 2x).

      Process the equation within the parentheses to simplify the equation. In the above example, this would give you a simplified equation of (5 * square root of 2x).
