May, the month devoted to Mary, is the perfect time for preschoolers to participate in this fun hand and footprint project. You will need light blue, yellow and pink paint, a paintbrush, markers and poster board. Instruct the preschooler to dip one foot into blue paint and press the foot carefully onto poster board. The foot is Mary's dress, the heel being the neckline. Instruct the preschooler to press the palm-only of her hand into the pink paint and press it into the area above the neckline to create Mary's head. The child can outline Mary's head in blue for her veil. Mary's crown can be created by the preschooler dipping four fingers in yellow paint and pressing them on top of Mary's head. Facial features can be added with markers.
All children enjoy making and playing with toy people. Paper dolls of St. Michael the Archangel can be made and used in a preschool lesson to celebrate the feast of St. Michael and the archangels, which is at the end of September. Printable paper dolls of St. Michael the Archangel can be found on the Internet for you to print out. You can also cut out a picture of St. Michael from a coloring book and make copies. Glue them onto cardboard with glue sticks, cut to fit the shape. The preschoolers can color the paper dolls and glue Popsicle sticks to the back of the cardboard.
June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This craft is a fun, but simple one, that only requires red icing and red sprinkles. After doing the Sacred Heart of Jesus lesson to the preschoolers, let them each decorate a large pre-baked, heart-shaped cookie with red icing and then add the sprinkles. The children will enjoy making and eating the treat.
Paint the outside of a paper cup and a cardboard roll with brown marker. Help the preschooler cut around the base of the cup about 1 inch from the bottom. Cut slits within the cup and bend them to form a mane. Draw features on the bottom of the cup to form lion facial features. Punch four holes in the cardboard roll for legs. Cut one yellow pipe-cleaner in half. Thread each pipe-cleaner through two holes to form front and back legs. Hold the legs in place with tape, within the roll. Wrap yellow yarn around the outside of the roll to give the lion fuzz. Tape on a length of yarn for a tail. Help the preschooler glue or tape the head to the body and wings on the lion's sides.
