Easy Art Projects for Preschoolers

Art is one way for preschoolers to express feelings, thoughts and ideas due to the inability of the students to write words. Encouraging a child to use structured and unstructured art activities within the classroom with teach him to follow directions and show individuality. Make available a wide variety of art materials such as safety scissors, patterned paper scraps, tissue paper, foam shapes, wooden craft sticks, markers, colored pencils, paint and crayons.
  1. Sugar Cube Sculptures

    • Given a handful of sugar cubes, preschool children can create an original art sculpture. Instruct a student to use imaginative measures to make sugar cube art by gluing the sweet blocks to a durable piece of cardboard in an order or shape of her choosing. After completing the art and allowing it to dry, the student may paint her work with washable tempura paint.

    Me and My Shadow

    • Preschoolers will create a masterpiece while learning about the sun and its ability to create art when generating a shadow art project. Instruct a student to draw a full-length picture of himself and cut it out. Trace the picture on a piece of gray paper to make a same-sized shadow and cut it out as well. Paste the person and his shadow onto a piece of white paper surrounded by student-drawn scenery.

    Letter Collage

    • Using old magazines, store catalogs and newspapers, cut out numerous samples of all of the alphabet letters. The students will choose from these letters to make an artful collage with random art materials and the cut-out letters. Challenge a preschooler during the art activity to find specific letters from previous alphabet lessons or to find all the letters in his name to include in the letter collage. Manufactured foam letters may be substituted for print letters when necessary.

    Edible Art

    • Combine a small amount of milk and a drop or two of red, blue, green and yellow food coloring into four separate disposable bowls for students to use in creating edible art. On a piece of bread, the preschool students can paint the colored milk into different designs, patterns or shapes, but give each student a new, unused paintbrush. One cycle through a toaster and the preschooler's art is a colorful snack to enjoy.
