Harvest Art Projects for Preschool

Bursting with colors and cooler temperatures, fall means back-to-school and some restless preschoolers who miss the summer. Engage your preschoolers in a variety of hands-on art projects that keep them busy, as well as learning about the fall colors and holidays. Exuberant preschoolers and a few supplies are all you need to get started.
  1. Fall Tree Painting

    • Help your preschoolers make a fall tree painting using their forearms, hands and fingers. Paint each preschooler's forearm and hand (palm side) with brown tempera paint and help her place it on a piece of construction paper. This creates the trunk and branches of the fall tree. Place several bowls of orange, red, brown and yellow tempera paint where the children can reach them. Help the preschoolers dip the ends of their fingers into the paint and create fall leaves on the tree. Give each student a paper towel to wipe her fingers between colors.

    Fall Door Wreath

    • The pupils can help you create a fall door wreath for the classroom. Take the children outside and tell them to pick up fall leaves, acorns, small twigs and pine cones. The preschoolers can help you arrange the items on a polystyrene foam wreath. Then you can hot-glue each item to the wreath. Hang the wreath on the classroom door for the children to adore throughout the fall months. For added decoration, create a fall-theme bow and tie it to the top or bottom of the wreath.

    Pumpkin Heads

    • Purchase several Mr. Potato Head pieces and put them in a large tub. You can find these at some thrift stores or online. Give each preschooler a medium-size pumpkin. Poke holes where the eyes, nose and mouth go on the pumpkin. The preschoolers can pick out Mr. Potato Head pieces to design their pumpkin as they like. If you students need more holes for a hat or other accessory, poke the hole for them. Award prizes for the most creative, funniest, silliest and scariest pumpkin head.

    Leaf Sticks

    • Have the preschoolers gather fall leaves or purchase silk fall leaves from your local craft store. The children can pick their favorite leaf and glue it to the top of a wood craft stick. Give each child a pair of googly eyes to glue on the leaf. The children can use markers, paint and glitter to decorate their leaf sticks. Put the stick into a pot of soil, or the preschoolers can use the leaf sticks as bookmarks.
