Read aloud to your child. Some alphabet books combine wonderful rhythms with imaginative illustrations. When you read the phrase, "A is for" pause and allow your child to say the word. The illustrations of the poem books help children identify the proper word that goes with a specific letter and to recognize it over time.
Help children to add words of their own. Show them other items that also begin with the letter they're learning.
Create your own ABC poem books. Encourage your child to make up alphabet poems and write them down or help your child write them himself. Encourage the child to illustrate the ABC poem, and then make it into a book.
