Begin your adventure at your local fabric store. Several major pattern companies make acceptable costume pattern choices. Keep in mind that these patterns may not be totally accurate, rely upon modern fastenings and typically do not account for period undergarments. Simplicity patterns are the best choice in terms of accuracy and offer several options.
Natural fibers are the best option for an authentic look. Linen and wool are ideal for the most accurate Renaissance looks. You may find synthetic fabrics that replicate the relatively rough weave of homespun linen. Finer fabrics should be used for more luxurious garments and rougher ones for simpler choices. Richer garments can be made in brocades or similar fabrics; however, you should choose fabrics with less of a sheen to create a more period look. Satins and velvets were available, but very costly during the Renaissance.
While styles vary throughout Europe during the Renaissance, the same basic pieces are worn in more or less complex forms. A woman's outfit should include a shirt or chemise, a bodice, an underskirt and overskirt, and shoes. Appropriate undergarments will complete the look if you are aiming for historical accuracy. She should also wear a hat, headpiece or snood.
A man's Renaissance costume needs breeches and boots, a shirt, vest and hat. Finer fabrics and details can make the difference between a basic middle class Renaissance costume and a costume for the nobility.
