Past decades are often chosen as the theme for homecoming costume days. For this theme, dress in a costume that corresponds to a decade of your choice, or dress in something that relates to the decade your school has chosen. For a 1920s-theme, girls can sport flapper dresses, while guys can don zoot suits. If you're a girl, wear a poodle skirt or a Pink Ladies jacket and bobby socks and if you're a guy, wear a pair of madras paints or a leather jacket for a 1950s-theme. Bring the 1960s back to life with bell bottom pants, tie-dye shirts, peace sign necklaces and love beads.
If your school has chosen a superhero theme, take the opportunity to pretend you are your favorite superhero for a day. To transform into Batman, sport a dark blue cape, a gray T-shirt with an emblem of a bat painted on it, gray pants and a dark blue face mask. For a Superwoman costume, paint a red "S" on a blue T-shirt, put on a red skirt and a red cape. Look at a picture of your favorite superhero for inspiration and assemble the costume using items already in your closet or inexpensive items that can be purchased from a craft supply or a thrift store.
Mardi Gras is a festive time of the year, filled with vibrant parades, colors and energy. If your school opts for a Mardi Gras theme, dress up as if you are attending a Mardi Gras parade. Put on a decorative mask, wear green and purple beads, sport a flashy dress or suit, or dress up as a court jester.
The Old West is another common theme featured during homecoming week, and dressing up as a cowboy or cowgirl is fairly simple to do. Wear a pair of blue jeans, a plaid or flannel shirt and a tassel vest. A pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat are must-have accessories that complete the look of a costume for this theme. You can also carry around a lasso and a toy horse to further add to your western costume.
