Use the Internet to research the life cycle of a butterfly. Learn more about what items will be needed in addition to the cocoons, such as food and an environment for the butterflies once they emerge.
Determine what type of environment the cocoons will be hatched in. An old fish tank with a mesh lid is one option, or a whole kit can be purchased with the cocoons. Some sites (see References) offer kits that include a container or mesh enclosure for the butterflies once they hatch from their cocoons.
Use the Internet to decide which cocoon life cycle kit option is best for you. Butterfly larvae can be purchased separate from a hatching container, and you likely will need to order food along with the cocoons.
Determine how many sets or cocoons are desired before ordering. Kits range in price from $30 to $50, depending on amount of larvae included and whether a hatching container is included.
Fill out the order form and follow directions provided on the website. Most orders are shipped within 5 to 10 days to ensure the cocoons are still viable.
While awaiting the cocoons, prepare an area for observing the life cycle of the butterflies. If using a fish tank as a hatching container, thoroughly clean the tank and place several sticks within the tank. Make sure the mesh cover fits well to keep the butterflies enclosed.
Follow the directions included with the cocoons to properly hatch butterflies.
