How to Create Sentences on Printable Primary Lined Paper

Young children who are learning to read and write often begin by learning their ABC's. Once the alphabet has been mastered and can be written clearly, they can then progress to learning to write simple, basic sentences. Because young children often have larger, less structured handwriting, they will need to begin writing sentences on printed primary-lined paper. This type of paper will have extra wide spacing and a middle guide line.

It is important to structure your sentences correctly.

Instruct your child to dictate a sentence to you that contains a subject, which is the focus of the sentence, and a verb, which is the action of the sentence. Write their sentence down onto paper using large letters and clearly legible printed handwriting.

      Use careful penmanship.

Place the dictated paper in front of your child, and place a sheet of printed primary paper underneath it. Give your child a pencil, and instruct him to copy the sentence onto his primary paper. Instruct him to keep the lower-case letters underneath the middle guide line, and to begin all of the taller letters, such as "H" and "T," on the top line.

You can write sentences to tell a story.

Remind your child that every sentence begins with a capital letter, and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a period, exclamation mark or question mark. If her sentence contains proper nouns, remind your child that these specific nouns are capitalized as well. Once your child has finished her sentence, allow her to read it aloud to you, helping her as needed.
