Interactive Science Activities

Interactive science activities can turn an ordinary science lesson into an exciting, hands-on lesson that gets students involved. When students are allowed to actually produce a science experiment, instead of simply reading or hearing about it, they can absorb much more of the science lesson.
  1. Hovering Plate

    • Making a hovering plate can teach students about the force that air can have. To make a hovering plate, poke a pen through the middle of a plastic plate. Use a hammer to poke a hole through the bottom of a film roll container with a nail. Remove the nail and discard it. Tape the canister to the plate with duct tape, lining up the holes. Blow up a balloon, and wrap the opening around the film container. The air from the balloon will shoot through the holes, and will lift up and move the plate.

    Soda Boat

    • Students can learn about the chemical reactions of acids and bases by making a soda bottle boat. Use a hammer and nail to poke a small hole into the cap of an empty soda bottle. Fill the bottle with a half-cup of small pebbles or marbles. Lay out six to seven sheets of toilet paper, and pour one cup of baking soda onto the paper evenly. Roll up the paper and insert it into the bottle. Pour two cups of white vinegar into the bottle and screw on the cap. Place the bottle into a tub of water and watch as the vinegar mixes with the baking soda and releases gas, making the bottle shoot across the tub.

    Gumdrop Geometry

    • Students can learn about the geometry and symmetry of nature by making structures out of toothpicks and gumdrops. Poke a toothpick into a gumdrop, then poke the other end into a second gumdrop. Stick another toothpick into one of the gumdrops. Poke a gumdrop onto the second toothpick's open end. Insert a third toothpick connecting the two toothpicks, effectively making a triangle. Repeat this process until you have created four more triangles. Connect the triangles together using more toothpicks until you have created an enclosed dome.
