Science & Social Studies Activities

Teaching classes such as science and social studies can sometimes become rote and seem routine. Add a little variety to your lesson plan by including a few interactive activities. It can make the information you are teaching feel more meaningful and exciting to your students.
  1. Paper Bag Masks

    • Paper bags can be transformed into mammal, fish, reptile, bird or amphibian masks for science classes. They can become the faces of historical figure for history or social studies classes. Place the paper bag with the flap side down, and cut out eye holes on the front. Decorate the bag using markers, felt fabric, glitter glue, feathers, sequins or fake fur to make the bag resemble an animal or historical figure. Allow the glue to dry completely before wearing it.

    Scenic Diorama

    • Students can make a scenic diorama to recreate a scene from a historical event when studying social studies. They can fashion a biome, such as a desert or a jungle, when studying science. Place a piece of cardboard onto a flat table and cover the cardboard with craft glue. Sprinkle dirt, bark, moss or leaves over the surface. This will be the ground of the diorama. Cut out tree shapes, house shapes, human or animal shapes from construction paper, and glue them onto the diorama. Once dry, the diorama can be displayed.

    Illustrated Paper

    • One way to make sure that your students are fully absorbing the material is to allow them to write a few paragraphs about the lesson, then illustrate the lesson on a separate sheet of paper. Allow the students to use their own words, and to draw whatever images they want to represent the lesson. Each student's work will be unique, and will allow them to fully process the material that they are being taught.
