How to Recognize Your Own Learning Style

Many people go through much of their school career without ever realizing their own learning style. Being able to recognize your primary learning style is a powerful tool that can help you organize, focus and work well on a team. Visual learners learn best when they can see something done or presented to them in the form of a drawing, video or other visual representation. Auditory learners learn best from lectures or reading aloud. Kinesthestic learners need hands on experience to retain information. Recognizing your own learning style is simply a matter of taking stock of how you react to and process information.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn about each of the different learning styles. Identify all of the characteristics of each style and think about how they apply to you. You may feel you overlap into two styles, but it is likely that one is your primary learning style.

    • 2

Decode your learning style with a walk down memory lane. Place yourself back in the classroom (figuratively). Think about your favorite teachers, projects, and assignments. Decide which characteristics they share and categorize them into a learning style.

    • 3

Ask an old teacher, mentor, friend or family member for help if you are having trouble remembering your school years. Get other peoples' opinions on your learning style; their feedback may be very useful.

    • 4

Take an online quiz to determine your learning style. Answer all of the multiple choice questions at sites such as ldpride.net that are designed to recognize your primary learning style. (Find a link in References.) Submit your answers and get your preferred learning style.
