The decision to home school is becoming more popular as parents consider religious concerns, school environments, quality of teaching and the needs of exceptional/special-needs children. It is important once the decision to home school has been made that parents proceed with full adherence to the laws and regulations of the state in which they reside. The state of Michigan is one of several states with minimal laws governing home schooling. Parents in Michigan may home school either as a parent home school or as a nonpublic school. The first option requires no notice and leaves the responsibility of ensuring children are being taught to the state officials. The second option has only a few steps and requirements.
