How Do I Design a High School Ring for a Homeschooled Child?

Designing a high-school class ring for a homeschooler is just as exciting and easy as it is for a teen who is graduating from a public school. The trend at one time was to feature the high school's mascot or a school color on the ring. Today's seniors have veered away from that trend. Consider your homeschooler's personality or choice of career as design possibilities and remember that designing the ring is all about helping your child choose what he or she wants.

Including the graduation year on the ring is important to many students.

Find the student's ring-finger size. Visit a jewelry store or the jewelry counter at a discount store. Ask a salesperson to let you borrow a ring sizer to find the student's correct ring size. Websites also have ring sizers that can be printed out and used for measuring.

Decide upon a price range for the ring.

Visit jewelry stores in your area that sell class rings and visit online companies such as Jostens and BuyClassRings. Compare styles and prices, and establish some monetary guidelines. Be sure to choose a seller that can accommodate all the options your student wants. If your homeschooler wants to use custom artwork on his ring, for example, you will want to choose a seller that can provide that option.

Platinum rings may hold up the best, but they are also the most expensive.

Choose the base material for the ring, depending upon your budget. Base materials to choose from are yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum and a combination of silver and gold.

Rubies and diamonds, and their synthetic substitutes, are popular stones for class rings.

Decide upon the gem for the main stone. Does the student want her birthstone as the main stone? Perhaps she'd like some other favorite stone such as topaz, sapphire or garnet. If a real gemstone is out of your price range, consider a synthetic gemstone, which will be less expensive.

Some homeschoolers enjoy having a cross or other religious symbol on their ring.

Choose the side designs. Depending upon ring size and the style of the ring, the items that can be included will vary. The homeschooler may want the graduation year on one side and her initials or a scripture reference engraved on the inside. Some homeschoolers enjoy having a sports emblem, drama symbol, or hobby symbol on the side opposite of the year.
