Students must be Florida residents enrolled in a public or private school in the 11th or 12th grade. Home schooled students must also be Florida residents and must be in a registered home school program but can dual enroll in 10th, 11th or 12th grade. To be able to enroll in college credit courses, student must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. For certificate programs, students must have a GPA of 2.0 or above. Students must also pass a college placement test and must meet any other admissions criteria required by the college in which they will be enrolled.
Hundreds of courses that count as both high school and college credit courses are available across the state to the dual enrolled student. The Dual Enrollment Course Equivalency List at FACTS.org identifies specific courses that satisfy high school graduation requirements in addition to earned college credit. Courses that cannot be applied toward subject area graduation requirements must count as an elective. Not all college courses are available to the dual enrolled student. Remedial and physical education skills courses are not available to dual enrolled students. College credits earned during dual enrollment are transferrable to any public college or university in Florida offering the same courses.
Dual enrolled students who attend a Florida public college or university are exempt from tuition, registration and laboratory fees. Public school students do not pay for their textbooks either. However, home educated students and students from private school are responsible for purchasing their own books and materials.
The dual enrollment opportunities also extend to home school students who want to take a single class at a public school or participate in extra curricular activities. Students enrolled in a registered home education program in grades 6 through 12 can dual enroll with a public school to join sports teams, marching band and cheerleading or take a class that they would not normally have access to in their home school program.
