AK Homeschooling Resources

In her 2002 book, "Real life homeschool: the story of 21 families who make it work," author Rhonda Barfield points to the State of Alaska as a location where some families must home-school due to the remote nature of the state. Barfield also points to the fact that this forces innovation such as the creation of the Interior Distance Education network to provide public school district support for home-schooled students. This is just one example of a resource which is available to Alaska home-schooler parents.
  1. Interior Distance Education Network

    • The Interior Distance Education Network provides Alaska home-school families with the support of a public school system. The Galena City School District sponsors the program and allows Alaskan home-schoolers to enroll in the IDEA program while continuing their home education studies. As of 2011, the network allotted up to $2,000 per year for the student's educational needs. This funding allows parents to purchase textbooks, notebooks, globes, flash cards, microscope slides, field trip admission to museums and other school supplies. The program also provides support to home-school parents. Parents are assisted by field representatives who are experienced home-schoolers. IDEA field offices are established in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Soldotna and Wasilla.

The IDEA experience culminates with a graduation ceremony in which the parents are presented with a diploma to award to their graduate. The ceremony is designed to recognize the important role parents play in their child's education. These ceremonies take place in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau.

Alaska Private and Home Educators Association

    • The Alaska Private and Home Educators Association (APHEA) lays claim to being Alaska's statewide home-schooler organization since 1986. The association presents seminars, release publications and sponsors an annual convention where parents can meet with curriculum vendors. Association members are also provided with information regarding political issues in Alaska and the association acts as the liaison between Alaska home-schoolers and the state legislature.

    Alaska Private Homeschoolers Email List

    • The Alaska Private Homeschoolers Email List is designed to support Alaska home-school families who do not accept state funding. The list provides a support network through which parents can ask questions of other parents. The list is also used to coordinate get-togethers and field trips for home-schooled children.

    Delta Cyber School

    • The Delta Cyber School provides Alaska home-school students with access to a variety of online projects, assessments and discussion. Students use online web-conferences to communicate with their class instructor. Alaska home-schoolers who are not enrolled in any other Alaska public school distance education course are eligible to enroll at the Delta Cyber school.
