Umbrella Schools for Home Schoolers in Nashville, Tennessee

In the state of Tennessee, families who intend to homeschool must either register with their school district as homeschoolers or register as homeschoolers under an umbrella school, often called a Church Related School, or CRS. Each CRS has requirements for record-keeping, testing, and/or curriculum that must be met by the families who register with it. In the Nashville, area there are several CRS umbrella schools. While only one is inside the city limits, others exist in the surrounding geographical area a short distance away.
  1. Jesus Only Academy

    • Jesus Only Academy is a Christ-centered school offering classes for PreK2 through 12th grade. According to the website, it provides both academic and spiritual support for students. Operating out of Jesus Only Tabernacle in Nashville, Jesus Only Academy offers on-site classes in addition to operating as a homeschooling umbrella school.

    Family Christian Academy

    • Family Christian Academy exists as a CRS aimed solely at assisting homeschooling families. The academy offers services such as placement testing, on-line classes, athletics programs, apprenticeship programs and transcript services. As of 2011, enrollment costs $70 for grades K-8 and $90 for grades 9-12, with discounts for early registration available. The offices and private school are located in Old Hickory, about 17 miles northeast of Nashville.

    Aaron Academy

    • Aaron Academy's focuses on encouraging and training the parents, as well as assisting the children with further their education. Aaron Academy exists only as an umbrella school and offers transcript services, testing, and curriculum assistance to its members. Enrollment fees are $85 for high school, $70 for K-8, as of 2011, and discounts for subsequent children are available. It is based out of Hendersonville, about 20 miles northeast of Nashville.

    Heritage Christian Academy

    • Founded by Katrina Hagerty in 1993, Heritage Christian Academy is another CRS umbrella school based in Mount Juliet, 13 miles east of Nashville. Like most other CRSs, it offers records services, high school diplomas, testing, curriculum assistance and field trips. If registered before September 1, 2011, the fee is $65 for the first student and $46 for every subsequent student, making it one of the more affordable umbrella schools in the Nashville area.

    Heritage Covenant Schools

    • Heritage Covenant Schools (HCS) website boasts it is the first school established in Tennessee to work toward providing alternatives for families outside the traditional classroom. The website also mentions the reporting procedures HCS designed to keep records of students educated outside the traditional classroom. Based out of Franklin, 20 miles south of Nashville, HCS has been in existence since 1986.
