How to Tie a Bell Rope Knot

Bell-ropes are typically the fanciest piece of knot work on a maritime vessel. The bell-rope hangs from the bell's clapper allowing sailors to sound the bell. While most bell-ropes are tapered, the length and intricacy of knots can vary greatly depending on the size of the bell and the vessel. The type of knot that caps the bottom of a bell-rope sets the style for the rest of the covering. Learning to tie your own bell-rope knot allows you to make your own piece of maritime memorabilia.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out small threads going the same direction in multiples of three to cover the end of your bell-rope. Bind the loose thread ends against the stem of the bell-rope with a constrictor knot.

    • 2

Weave a group of three small threads through the threads you secured above. Pull the group of threads over three and under three. Continue the pattern until you have weaved the group of three threads through all the perpendicular threads.

    • 3

Repeat with another group of three small threads. Alternate weaves over and under groups of three threads to create a checkerboard pattern. Continue repeating until you've covered the entire end of your bell-rope.

    • 4

Tuck each end under the constrictor knot as you finish weaving. Tie down another constrictor knot over the ends of the weave. Adjust the weave so the end knot is perpendicular to itself.
