Give each child at least one piece of card stock. You can use a large size, or cut it into small pieces.
Instruct the children to decorate the pages according your direction. They can draw geometric shapes, color designs or pictures or put stickers on the paper.
Punch a hole in each corner of each paper.
Cut the yarn into foot-long pieces. You will trim them shorter later, but the longer lengths make it easier to tie.
Lay the pieces of paper out in a quilt pattern on the floor. Mix and match until you like the way it looks.
Thread a piece of string into the two holes that are adjacent to each other, in different pieces of paper. Continue until all the holes are tied to another hole. Hang a long piece of thread from the top left hole to the top right hole and hang the quilt on the wall.
Cut pieces of fabric to the desired size. You should have at least one piece for each student.
Have the students decorate the squares with paint or fabric pens. Allow them to dry before moving the squares.
Sew the squares together on the sewing machine. This may have to be done at home, depending on the age of the students. If the students are older, or if you're teaching a sewing class, have them sew it.
Lay the backing fabric on the floor or a large table. It should be right side facing down. Lay the batting on top, followed by the quilt top. Tape all three sides down; there should be no lumps or wrinkles in the three layers.
Thread your needle with yarn. Use at least 2 yards so you have to cut less frequently.
From the top, push your needle down through all three layers. Bring it right back up about 1/4 inch from where you went down. Move your needle about 6 inches away and repeat. Continue taking one stitch and moving until you run out of thread.
Cut the thread in the middle of each long strand. This should give you two tails for each stitch.
Tie the tails into square knots and trim the tails to about 1 inch long.
Thread your needle again and repeat until the entire quilt is tied.
Sew binding onto the quilt.
