How to Tie Butterfly Hooks

The butterfly hook -- also known as the butterfly knot, Alpine butterfly knot or the Alpine butterfly loop -- is a hook-like knot tied into the middle of a rope. The knot is used in rock climbing, mountaineering and fishing. While it is difficult to tie at first, it's useful in strengthening weak rope and for attaching individuals to the mid-section of a line. With a little practice, almost anyone can learn to tie this useful knot.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a length of rope in its midsection and wrap it around your non-dominant hand -- the left for right-handed individuals and vice versa for those left handed -- three times.

    • 2

Reach under the lines in your palm and take the middle line. Pull this line toward the tips of your fingers, the pass it back over top of the other two lines, toward your forearm.

    • 3

Pass the line that you have pulled toward your forearm under the two remaining lines and slowly remove the rope from your hand.

    • 4

      Pull the loop tight.
