How to Tie a Knot With a Loop & End

Knot tying is an art practiced by outdoorsmen and mariners. Special knots can be used to tie off gear or secure a boat to a pier. A bowline is also known as a loop knot because of the loop formed below the knot itself. The bowline is preferred by boaters because it's easy to undo and doesn't slip up or jam.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the rope vertically on a flat surface in front of you, with the shorter end at the bottom. This will be the end you will work with.

    • 2

Grab the rope far enough up to form a loop large enough for your use. Pinching the top and bottom of the rope together, form a circle loop with the bottom end crossing over the top.

    • 3

Hold the circle loop with your left hand and grab the bottom end of the rope with your right hand. Hold the circle loop tightly.

    • 4

Stick the bottom end of rope up through the circle, coming from the bottom up. Continue pulling the bottom end of the rope through the circle and wrap it around the back of the top rope above the circle loop.

    • 5

Stick the bottom end of the rope back through the circle going from the top down. Pull tightly to secure the knot. Your bowline knot is now complete.
