Days of Creation Bible Activities

The familiar Genesis account of the days of creation starts, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" and goes on to describe such a diversity of created creatures and systems that teachers have a wealth of background material around which to design creation Bible activities. Whether you have a series of creation stations or an ongoing creation unit over several sessions, each activity can help focus the kids in on what God created on each day of creation.
  1. Light

    • When God started creating, he first turned on the lights and separated day from night to divide work and playtime from rest time. Turn out the room lights and play flashlight tag to see the difference a little light makes in a dark place. When someone is tagged in the flashlight beam, she becomes "it" and tries to tag someone else. Make light catchers with wax paper and melted crayons and thank God for light to see by.

    Division of Waters

    • Before the earth could support life, the Bible says, God knew it needed atmosphere. Go outside and watch the clouds and talk about how the wind makes the clouds move even though you can't see it, just like God's creation is evidence that He is there, even though you can't see Him. Let each child draw a large cloud on a piece of white poster board and decorate it. Cut a space in the middle just big enough to fit around the child's face. Let the children wear their clouds. Clear a large area to represent the sky and tell them to drift slowly around while you blow but to stop when you stop blowing.

    Trees and Plants

    • A healthy ecosystem to support life needs trees and plants so God planted the earth with all kinds of greenery on the third day to give us food to eat and air to breathe. Celebrate this part of God's creation by planting a garden or a tree in your yard. Schedule a field trip to plant trees with a local environmental organization. Make hand-print trees or tissue paper flowers.

    Sun and Moon

    • The diurnal and seasonal rhythms of the universe started with the creation of the sun, moon and stars. Hold a backyard star party, visit a planetarium or attend an event with a local astronomy club to observe God's timing patterns in action. Alternately, line a refrigerator box with black paper or paint. Punch holes to represent stars and constellations in the top and let kids take turns crawl in for a view of the stars in your makeshift planetarium. Make mobile with a sun, moon and stars to remind you to thank God for His creation.

    Marine Life and Birds

    • With the life supports in place, God added sea creatures and birds to the mix. Play a game of charades, either by acting out or drawing different types of birds and sea life and letting the group guess. Make fish and bird stick puppets and act out what the animals might have done on their first day on earth.

    Land Animals and Humans

    • God was ready to put the finishing touches on His creation with the addition of land animals and human beings, who He set as caretakers of all creation. Take a hike in a wildlife sanctuary area and see how many different animals you can see. Visit the zoo and try to find an animal you've never seen before and learn about it. Ask a wildlife organization how you can help with their efforts to preserve the beautiful creatures that God created. Make full-body traces of each child and let them decorate their outlines with pictures and words that show all the ways that God made them special.

    God Rested

    • After all that work, even God needed a break. Take a pajama party break after all your work learning about creation. Let each child curl up with favorite pillows and blankets and serve snacks. Kick back, watch a movie about creation and just relax.
