Bible Story Crafts for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

"Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego's bold statement of faith before King Nebuchadnezzar has to go down as a classic in the history of showdowns with the powers that be. Bible story crafts for this lesson can help remind children to stand strong in faith and boldness, trusting in God even in the face of severe persecution.
  1. Statue Bowling Game

    • The impetus for the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego's triumph of faith is the king's command to worship his idol and their refusal to compromise their faith. Kids can demonstrate their own loyalty to God by making an idol bowling game. Glue pictures of idols to strips of cardboard and bend the bottom edge out so it will stand up. Set them up in a row or like bowling pins. The goal is to knock down as many idols as possible by throwing bean bags or rolling small balls at them. As the idols fall, the kids yell, "We serve only the Lord our God!"

    Fiery Furnace Diorama

    • A shoebox diorama of the fiery furnace gives a graphic demonstration of God's miraculous rescue of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Color paper figures of the three faithful men and an angel. Attach to the bottom end of a craft stick, letting the top end stick up for a handle. Cut a door in one end of the box. A row of tissue or construction paper flames attached to the open front of the box turn it into a fiery furnace. Make a slit from the top of the side door across the top of the box. Your puppets can slide in and out of the furnace as you tell the story. For more storytelling props, you can make additional puppets to serve as the king and the guards who died from the heat.

    Fiery Furnace Mosaic

    • For younger kids, a fiery furnace mosaic may be your craft ticket. Cut paper squares ahead of time and let kids use them as bricks to design a furnace entrance arch and glue it to a background paper. Color figures of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and the angel, cut them out and glue them under the arch. Strips of red, orange and yellow tissue paper portray the flames. The kids will better remember the point of the lesson if you add a caption that reads, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent His angel and delivered His servants who put their trust in Him. Daniel 3:28."

    Angels in the Furnace Mobile

    • A mobile of the angel in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego serves as a take-home reminder of God's sufficiency to rescue you from even the most humanly impossible situations. Construct a hanging base using a hanger or cross-pieces of drinking straws, wooden skewers, chopsticks or dowels. Color and cut out character figures, including the angel, and flames. Hang the figures interspersed with the flames from the support. Dangle a placard from the center that reads, "Not a hair on their head was singed nor were their bodies burned because they trusted in the Lord."
