A Children's Bible Lesson on the Lost Coin & Sheep

Luke 15:1-10 covers the parable concerning the lost sheep and the lost coin. Children learn about God's love and rejoicing when people choose to follow Him. They also learn how God values all souls and forgives sinners. Include several activities, such as crafts and puzzles, to help children remember concepts and virtues during Bible studies.
  1. Lost Coin Games

    • Chocolate coins are a tasty way to study the parable of the lost coin.

First read out loud Luke 15: 8-10 and then complete one of the following fun activities. Fill a large box with straw or sawdust and mix with chocolate coins. Have children use one hand to try to find a coin. Another option is to place chocolate coins around the room and turn off the lights. Let kids work in groups of two with a flashlight to try to find two chocolate coins. If you prefer not to use chocolate, use pennies instead and let them keep the pennies after they find them.

    Coloring Pages

    • Coloring helps children remember Bible virtues.

Copy different coloring pages with the verses from Luke 15:1-10, pictures of sheep, coins and children or families to form a booklet for each child. Use yarn or ribbon to fasten the pages together through holes punched on the left-hand side. Have children decorate the pages with different types of medium such as crayons, markers, sequins, cotton balls, foil and stickers. Encourage children to use these booklets to memorize a verse from the Luke stories. Older children may want to try to remember all the passages about the lost sheep and the lost coin.

    Cotton Ball Sheep

    • Use cotton balls to make sheep crafts with children.

Make the Bible study fun by completing simple crafts. Cotton balls are an inexpensive and a creative way to make a sheep. Use paper plates, bubble eyes, a nose made from construction paper, and black yarn for a mouth. Then, glue cotton balls around the face to resemble a sheep. Another option is to print a sheep template from the internet and have children use cotton balls and crayons or markers to make a 3-D picture.

    Sentence Scramble

    • Have children work together on Bible study projects.

Have children write each word from Luke 15:1-10 on separate 3 x 5 cards. After the verses have been completed, scramble the cards on the floor and have kids work as a team to put the cards back together so they form the verses in order. For a more competitive game, complete two sets of 3 x 5 cards and divide children into two groups. Whichever group completes the verses first, wins.
