How to Write Conclusions for Expository Papers

Unlike essays that articulate the author's personal opinion, expository writing exposes or reveals facts and information, presenting an objective report on a subject. Nevertheless, writers must adhere to the basic format of introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. Both the introductory paragraph and the concluding paragraph in expository essays share the same intent: to stand as broad, general overviews of the essay's contents, and not unusually, the introduction can stand as the conclusion or the conclusion can serve as the introduction. The conclusion sums up all that goes before it; it poses as final thoughts on the subject.

Write a signal or transitional phrase to let readers know the essay's end approaches. Compose a topic sentence for the conclusion that rephrases the thesis. Since many paragraphs stand between the introduction's thesis and the closing paragraph, readers need a reminder of the essay's central focus.

Reread the body paragraphs that give the main ideas or building blocks that support the thesis. You need to have the essence of the body paragraphs in mind as you compose the conclusion. What should important ideas or information should readers remember?

    • 3

Write the most significant ideas from the body paragraphs in fresh language. Distill the body paragraphs to a few sentences. Synthesize ideas into the single idea that you want readers to grasp. Perhaps find a quotation, statistic or anecdote that comments on the subject.

Reread the closing, remaining calm about paragraph length. At this moment, often writers become uneasy at the conclusion's length and stop thinking about the ideas communicated to worry about paragraph length. Then, worried, they add an entirely irrelevant idea to make the closing longer but in the process destroy the summation. Conclusions need brevity; you have presented all the facts in the body paragraphs. No new ideas need development.
