How to Write Tall & Short Letters in Boxes

When children are learning how to write they are often required to practice writing letters on specially lined paper that has a dashed line. This helps them to write short or lowercase letters which only rise as high as the dashed line. The tall or uppercase letters, on the other hand, rise to the top line. Using the same principal, children can use boxes to learn to write neatly.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the paper on a flat surface in front of you. Orient it so that the boxes run left-to-right across the paper in the direction that you usually write.

    • 2

Write your first letter in the first box. For a short or lowercase letter, only go halfway to the top of the box. Ensure your letter fills the width of the box completely.

    • 3

Write the next letter. If it's a tall or uppercase letter, go all the way to the top of the box when you write the letter. Again, ensure your letter fills the width of the box completely.

    • 4

Finish writing all the letters. Check your work by ensuring that you have followed the rules for writing upper and lowercase letters. This means short or lowercase letters only fill half the box, while tall or uppercase letters fill the entire box.
