How to Write My Short Life's Story

"I am the only person in the world I should like to know thoroughly," stated Oscar Wilde. If this were the case for all of us, then the world would be filled with autobiographies, none of which would be read. In spite of this, writing your short life-story is an insightful journey that may prove useful to yourself and others.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your life. Make a list of your ten best or most memorable moments.

    • 2

Make a list detailing the ten worst or embarrassing moments of your life.

    • 3

Take a moment to visualize what affects you emotionally and write down everything that comes to mind.

    • 4

Interview the people closest to you, such as your parents, siblings and friends. Have them answer questions dealing with their perception of you, such as "what moment defines our friendship?"

    • 5

Read over your lists and determine a recurring theme throughout your life, such as connections between your best and worst moments.

    • 6

Form a tentative thesis for your life's story. The thesis should be something that you can focus the story around, such as a recurring theme found in your life.

    • 7

Outline the autobiography. Break your life down into segments such as childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. Determine what examples and sub-points will be used for each chapter of your life and write it down in your outline as a bulleted list.

    • 8

Write the first draft of your story according to the outline.

    • 9

Revise the story for shallow connections, bad grammar, passive language and common misspellings. Ensure that each sentence flows smoothly into the next and shows rather than tells. For example: "My hand slipped from the branch onto his leg, the shift in gravity pulling us both into the frigid river," is better than, "We both fell into the river."
