How to Footnote an Article From Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an online communal encyclopedia in which anyone can write and post articles on any subject. This, however, is part of the Wikipedia's problem. Anyone with an Internet connection can contribute to Wikipedia and while some cite their sources, others do not. Thus, a Wikipedia article should never be cited as a source in any research paper, essay, thesis or dissertation. An authoritative article cited by a writer as a source for Wikipedia, however, can be used in such a medium.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the type of reference that you have selected from Wikipedia. It might be a book, newspaper or magazine article, journal article or a university website. If the source comes from a book, you will probably need to find the page number if it is not already included.

    • 2

Check the writing style required by your assignment or school. There are many styles: Modern Language Association (MLA), Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press and American Psychological Association (APA) are some of the most common. Each of these styles suggests specific guidelines for citing different types of sources. Do not simply copy and paste the link from the Wikipedia article.

    • 3

Open your document and find the piece of information which you intend to reference from that specific source. Place the cursor at the end of the last sentence that draws on this information.

    • 4

Click on the "Insert" tab on the navigation menu from your word processing software. Scroll down to "References." A drop-down menu will now appear.

    • 5

Choose "Footnote" from the options. Select the placement and numbering of your footnotes. This will place a footnote at the end of the sentence and then either at the bottom of the page or at the end of the document.

    • 6

Paste the citation in that space. Then paste it again in the "Works Cited" section at the end of your paper. You do not need to include citations more than once or page numbers.

    • 7

Draw on the same source a second time by adding another footnote at the end of your second tidbit. Write simply "ibid" or the name of the author and the page number in the footnote.
