How to Close a Letter by Signing

The history of closing a letter with a signature and a closing statement goes at least as far back as the Bible. The "Los Angeles Times" traces the first closing to the apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossian church. Elaborate closings tend to occur in eras where writing letters and reading were popular pastimes. However, during hurried cultures, the use of these closings tends to diminish.

Instructions

    • 1

Write your letter, including the salutation and the body of your missive.

    • 2

End your letter with a polite phrase. This can be the standard "Yours faithfully," or something more elaborate. Consider the audience. A formal letter should carry a formal closing, while a letter to a loved one may be more heartfelt.

    • 3

Sign the letter below the closing. You can write it in manuscript or in cursive. You can also add creativity by adding stylish underlines or flourishes of the pen.
