How to Create Element of Surprise in Writing

Regardless of the kind of writing genre, be it suspense, romance or action, any writer will need to create the element of surprise to engage the reader in the story. The element of surprise is intrinsically connected to other storytelling elements, such as suspense, character development and rising action, but also includes other stylistic components, such as using punctuation and paragraph breaks effectively.

Instructions

  1. Exposition

    • 1
Even the smallest mystery can be used to create suspense.

Use the plot chart to determine the points of exposition, rising action and climax. The beginning of your story is the expository section, when the setting, characters and plot are revealed using dialogue or descriptive sentences.

    • 2

Your expository section also needs to contain certain narrative elements, such as foreshadowing to hint at future events, or false clues to mislead, depending on the type of story. Utilize these elements to begin building tension as the reader progresses through the story.

    • 3

Continue to build this tension in the second chapter with more action scenes as the exposition evolves into more intense conflict and complications.

    Rising Action and Climax

    • 4

Write using active verbs or the imperative tense to make the narrative move more fluidly from scene to scene as the conflict heightens.

    • 5

Shorten your paragraphs and sentences as the story progresses to quicken the pace of the story up to the climax.

    • 6

Make your climax as brief as possible and include some kind of catharsis for the reader. Solve the mystery, reveal the secret identity or determine whether the protagonist succeeds or fails. Use a sudden revelation if appropriate to increase the element of surprise.
