New Hampshire Approved Boater Safety Courses

Anyone over the age of 16 in New Hampshire who operates a boat over 25 horsepower must complete a boating education class and receive a certificate. The state Department of Safety offers dozens of classes throughout the state. New Hampshire also accepts boating education certificates from organizations like the U.S. Power Squadron, which also offers classes around the state. Online classes also are available. Once you receive your certification, it is good for life.
  1. Course locations

    • The New Hampshire Department of Safety offers a searchable database allowing boaters and prospective boaters to find boat safety classes in their regions. Preregistration for these classes is required. Classes generally cost $30 as of January, 2011. A permanent card, once the course has been completed, costs $10. State officials can direct you to classes in your region if you call 888-254-2125 or 603-267-7256. A listing of class offerings is also available on the New Hampshire Department of Safety's website (see References).

    Online courses

    • New Hampshire also offers an online boater safety course for anyone age 15 or over. After taking the course, you must successfully complete an exam overseen by a state-licensed instructor to receive your certificate.

    Home-Study Course

    • New Hampshire also offers a video-based course that you can watch on your home's television. The home-study course includes a 70-minute video and a student manual. After completion, you must take an exam overseen by an instructor to receive your certificate.

    Other options

    • The United States Power Squadron also offers boating safety classes that New Hampshire recognizes for certification purposes. Within 50 miles of Concord, for example, there are three Power Squadron classes offered at high schools and community centers. For $39.95 in January 2011, the Power Squadron offers a six-month membership and enrollment in one of its classes.
