Law enforcement is one type of public safety course. There are many different types of courses within law enforcement, including corrections officer basic training, policing the community, police procedure, fundamentals of policing, active shooter response, advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement, basic criminal investigation and more. Law enforcement courses are available for new police recruits as well as in training officers. The type of courses you need will depend on what you want to do in law enforcement, as some positions require specialized courses and additional training.
There are several different course options found underneath the fire protection heading. Learn about fire department organization, fire and emergency service master planning, critical incident stress management, special hazard planning, occupational safety and health administration and much more. Many of the courses found under fire protection can also be found in law enforcement, as an understanding of basic police procedures is necessary in fire protection.
The EMS program can lead to a one-year paramedic certificate. You can also use the credits earned in paramedic study for a full EMS degree. Courses within the EMS program will include clinical emergency medical technology, advanced practice, patient assessment, trauma management, EMS operations, medical emergencies and cardiology.
Other important parts of public safety include personal safety and self-defense. Personal safety courses focus on drugs, rape and sexual assault education, vandalism, theft, alcoholism and addiction prevention programs. These courses are not typically part of a specific academic program but are offered to all students, no matter what their area of study.
