OSHA Courses Offered at Community Colleges

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the federal agency in charge of safety and health legislation. The OSHA Training Institute (OTI) provides occupational safety and health administration training. Since 1992, OSHA has been providing OTI courses in partnership with educational institutions. OTI Education Centers are located in 10 regions and include six community colleges.
  1. Sinclair Community College

    • Sinclair Community College is part of Mid-America OSHA OTI Education Center consortium. It offers two safety engineering technology (SET) courses: associate and certificate. The SET associate course addresses construction and general industry safety issues, fire protection, waste management, industrial hygiene and industrial hygiene instrumentation and product design. It prepares students for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exam. Graduates work as safety engineering technicians in general and construction industries. The SET certificate course deals with industry safety, occupational safety and health, hazard control and analysis and industrial hygiene. Graduates work in safety management and industrial hygiene sectors. The SET certificate course is applicable to SET associate program.

    Metropolitan Community Colleges Business and Technology Center

    • Metropolitan Community College Business and Technology Center features an OSHA Education Center. Courses available cover the following niches: hazardous waste, construction, general industry and health care. Available certificates are specialist in safety and health, certified safety and health official, and safety, health and environmental professional. Three OSHA courses are available online: 10-hour construction industry outreach training program, 10-hour general industry outreach training program and 30-hour construction and general industry outreach training program.

    Kirkwood Community College

    • Kirkwood Community College is part of the Midwest OSHA Education Center consortium. Courses are divided into three categories: outreach trainer course (OTC), outreach trainer refreshers (OTR) and safety and health courses (SHC). OTC includes trainer course in occupational safety and health standards for the construction industry, trainer course in occupational safety and health standards for general industry, and disaster site worker train the trainer courses. ITR features two advanced courses: 24-hour update for construction industry outreach trainers (students have completed trainer course in occupational safety and health standards for the construction industry and are active in the outreach program) and update for general industry outreach trainers. OSHA safety and health courses deal with industrial hygiene, collateral duty safety health hazards and industrial machinery.

    Salt Lake City Community College and Red Rocks Community College

    • Salt Lake City Community College is part of the Mountain West OTI Education Center consortium. It offers one OSHA course only: associate of science degree environmental technology. The course prepares students to work in environmental, health and safety fields. Red Rocks Community College offers three certificate programs: construction specialist, environmental specialist and safety and health specialist. The first program includes various courses from the construction field, the second features environmental specific courses and the third includes various general industry specific courses.

    Chabot-Las Positas Community College District

    • The OSHA Training Center in Chabot-Las Positas Community College District (CLPCCD) is the only authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center in Northern California. It offers three professional safety certificates: safety associate (SA), specialist in safety and health (SSH) and certified safety and health official (CSHO). Available OSHA on-line courses are: 10-hour construction, 30-hour construction, occupational safety and health standards for the construction industry, occupational safety and health standards for general industry, eight-hour manpower, two courses in general industry and certificate courses in general and construction industry.
